What it does

Everything a team expects from a chat, in the same place as the rest of the work.

Channels with members

A channel is on its members’ lists, and anybody in it can bring a colleague in or take them out.

Topics in a channel

New Keep a discussion that should outlast the chat. A topic has a title, a first post and replies in order; pinned ones stay on top, an administrator can lock one, and everybody who replied is told when there is something new. Channels are invite-only, so only the people in a channel can see its topics.

Search everything that was said

New Type a few words and find the lines in the channels you are in and in your direct messages, and the topics of your channels, with the words marked. Press a line to open the conversation at that message. Capital letters, accents and Arabic vowel marks do not matter. It says how far back it looked, and a button looks further. A channel you are not in is never searched.

Calls from any channel

Start a call in a channel and everybody in it is rung and walks straight in. Anybody else knocks.

Voice notes and files

Record a voice note, paste a screenshot or drop in a file. Voice notes play on any phone, iPhones included.

Replies, reactions and edits

New Answer one message in particular — it is shown above your reply, and tapping it takes you back to it — react to it, or correct your own after sending.

Seen, and typing

See when the other person has read your message, and when they are writing back.

Notifications that say what

A new message shows who sent it and what it says while you work in another tab — and a channel only buzzes when it names you.

Who can see it

Only the people in it. A channel is invite-only — seen only by the people added to it, administrators included — and a direct conversation by the two people in it.

Nothing is scanned for advertising, and nothing is used to train anything.

Good to know

  • New A file too big for chat is not refused. It goes up through Files by itself, in parts that carry on after a dropped connection, and the conversation gets a link to it that works for 30 days — you just press send. Files you send in chat count toward your own 5 GB of storage, and you are told before a file that will not fit is sent.
  • New Reply in place. Choose Reply and a strip above the box says who and what you are answering, with a cross to change your mind. Nothing is copied into your box, so you write only your own words; the message you answered is drawn above your reply, in a phone or on a computer, and tapping it takes you to the original. Replies sent before this still show the message they answered.
  • New Chat on a phone has more room to write. The top of the conversation shows who you are talking to, the box grows as you write up to five lines, and the emoji, file and voice note buttons sit behind one + so the box and Send have the room. React, Reply, Edit and Delete appear when you tap a message, and go when you tap anywhere else; on a computer they appear when you point at it.
  • New When somebody is writing to you, a small bubble with the Meetowt house and its dot knocking appears at the end of the conversation — and in a channel it says who. It stays still, with the word typing, for anybody who has asked their device for less motion.
  • Messages are kept for two years, then removed.
  • New Search reads the newest messages first, a stretch at a time: up to 1,000 of your direct messages and up to 500 in each of your 30 most recently active channels, and the screen says exactly how far it got. A button looks further back. It runs in your own browser, through your own chat connection, so it can only read what you are already allowed to read; nothing is kept of what you searched for.
  • You can take back a message in a direct conversation. In a channel you can correct one; taking it back is not there yet.
  • Taking somebody out of a channel closes it to them within a minute: it leaves their list and the chat server turns them away.
  • Deleting a conversation removes it from your history and leaves the other person’s alone.
  • A message typed in Arabic reads right to left, the way it was written.
  • New Chat is in Arabic, too — the conversation list, channels, voice notes, files and calls, right to left, with days and file sizes written the Arabic way — when a person chooses it. More
  • New A message reaches your phone even when Meetowt is closed. Add Meetowt to your Home Screen, turn on notifications in Settings, and a message for you — a direct message, or a channel line that names you — comes as a notification. What travels through Google’s or Apple’s servers says only that a message arrived, never what it said, and a conversation you have muted stays quiet. Meetowt on your phone

Questions

Can people outside the company join our chat?

No. Chat is for the people at your company. To talk with somebody outside, invite them to a meeting: they get a link that lets them knock.

Does chat work on a phone?

Yes, in the phone’s browser — Meetowt is built for a phone screen, iPhones and Safari included. There is no store app to install: add Meetowt to your Home Screen from the browser and turn on notifications, and a message reaches you when Meetowt is closed. Meetowt on your phone.
